Dental Floss:

Dental Floss is a thin synthetic polymer string that is used to remove plaque and food particles from under the gum line and between your teeth, where a toothbrush cannot easily reach. Flossing is a golden key to enter into a good oral hygiene program. The Johnson & Johnson Corporation was the first to patent Dental Floss. Some of the brands of Dental Floss include Red Cross, Salter Sill Co. and Brunswick.

We often used to ask questions such as; what is the right way to floss?  What type of Dental Floss should I use? How often should I use Dental Floss? Is flossing necessary? Here are the answers, from your professionals at Town Center Dental.

The American Dental Association highly recommends the use of Dental Floss at least once a day, because flossing is the best method of removing plaque from the teeth. Using Dental Floss removes plaque which is an invisible bacterial film that develops on your teeth every day, and is the main cause of gum disease.

Proper Flossing is very necessary:

Removing bacteria is the fundamental aspect of good oral health, which can be done only by proper flossing. To receive maximum benefits from using Dental Floss, follow these easy steps-

Step 1) After taking a length of Dental Floss equal to the distance from your hand to your shoulder Wrap it around your index and middle fingers. Just leave about two inches between your hands for flossing.

Step 2) Start sliding the Dental Floss gently between your teeth and under the gum line from base to tip two or three times.

Step 3) Floss both sides of every tooth and backs of your last molars. Take a new section of the Dental Floss when it picks up particles.

Step 4) Every time brush your teeth after you use Dental Floss to ensure a good oral health.

There are two types of Dental Floss:

Nylon (or multifilament) Dental Floss
PTFE (monofilament) Dental Floss

Nylon Dental Floss comes waxed and unwaxed, and in a variety of flavors and also cheaper, it may sometimes tear or shred between teeth with tight contact points. While more expensive, single filament Dental Floss slides easily between teeth with tight spaces also and is virtually shred-resistant. But if used properly, both types of Dental Floss are excellent to remove plaque and food particles.

One type of Dental Floss does not work for everyone. You can choose between waxed or unwaxed dental floss, flavored or unflavored, and regular or tape types. To choose perfect Dental Floss ask your Dentist at Town Center Dental. Some companies are now marketing Dental Floss made from newer, "space age" materials. Some people cannot easily maneuver Dental Floss due to limited dexterity or arthritis. These people can try Dental Floss holders or intra-dental cleaners.
